Minutes Parish Pastoral Council Meeting October 3, 2007
Chairperson Linda Deptola called the Parish Pastoral Council meeting to order at 6:52 P.M. on October 3, 2007 in the Church Social Hall. Father Jim led the group in prayer.
In Attendance:
Council Members: Linda Deptola, Hilarie Hicks, Jim Lee, Vicky Shabbott, Mary Ann Cronin, Bill Strasburg, Jim Novotny, Joe Shabbott, Al Vela and Beverly Sabourin-Moore Ex-Officio Members: Father Jim Cowles, Arnold Nye Staff: Nadine McGrady Guests: Members of the Financial and Planning Committees Absent: Council Members Excused: Council Members Not Excused: Approval of Minutes: Jim Lee made a motion to approve the August 18, 2007 minutes as presented with some minor corrections. Seconded by Linda Deptola. The motion was unanimously approved. Father Jim opened the meeting thanking everyone for attending and emphasizing that we are here together to receive the same message. Planning Committee: Jim Lee the planning committee chair gave a presentation to the group on the background information, goals, plans, and accomplishments of the committee. He also discussed the demographics of the parish. Several topics discussed by the group after the presentation included the drainage problem under the church and safety problem with the multiple steps leading to the altar. Jim Lee stated that all these issues are being addressed in the master plan which a copy is available in a binder located in the church commons and is also posted on the church website. Committee Reports: Ecumenical Committee: A short presentation was given by the Gallagher’s regarding P.E.R.s and Ecumenical activities throughout the state particularly during the week of Christian Unity in January 2008. The parish council agreed to host neighboring parishes for a prayer service followed by dessert on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. It was noted that Janet Gomez from the Lutheran Church was interested in helping coordinate this and that Kitty Witty had also been contacted regarding the music for the prayer service. Father Jim suggested that perhaps the other parishes would invite us to their Unity services during that week. The Gallagher’s will coordinate with Fr. Jim for further planning. Christian Formation and Religious Education: See below Unfinished Business: Father Jim stated that we now have a volunteer to Chair the Justice and Peace Committee. Deana Cobbs has graciously agreed to accept this position. The Community Life Committee still does not have any volunteers. New Business: Other Business Items from Council Members: · Linda Deptola stated that she was not successful contacting Walter Hamilton. She called the Gazette Journal and was told that it costs $8.00 per week to place the church in the directory. She also stated that Church event notices were free of charge in the Gazette Journal. Mary Ann Cronin stated that we should post articles in the Catholic Virginian’s short take section of the paper. · Vicky Shabbott discussed the Pictorial Directory stating that we now have 3 dates set up for pictures. December, 3, 2007/January 18 and 19, 2008. · Mary Ann Cronin stated she was having an announcement in the bulletin the following week regarding new parishioners. Discussed having a quarterly reception for new parishioners in the rectory and to have different ministries at the reception to give a brief overview of the different ministries provided by the parish. Pastor Comments: None Announcements: The next Parish Council meeting will be on November 7, 2007. Closing Prayer: The meeting closed with a prayer given by Linda Deptola. PROGRAMS AND POLICIES: (a) UNDER STUDY: Will be looking at the changes to the RCIA program per the changes sent by the Office of Worship. Program to have one year of instruction before Rite of Acceptance. (b) PLANNED: update Faith Formation information on Website (c) UNDERWAY: The rebirth of the parish youth and junior youth groups (d) COMPLETED: Reviewed and revised the Faith Formation Mission Statement – One main statement for the program and one for the Youth group 2. Committee Name: Faith Formation Date: October 3, 2007 Person Submitting Report: Nadine McGrady 1. PROGRAMS AND POLICIES: (a) UNDER STUDY: (b) PLANNED: Registration of all catechists in the Pathways program, due November 1, 2007. Birthday Party for Jesus and Three Kings Celebration in December and January Adult Formation meet in Social Hall from 9:15 – 10:15 AM; begins October 14th. (c) UNDERWAY: Safety Weekend sponsored by Faith Formation program for all parishioners: Fire Drill, Child Identification Kits, Emergency Preparedness information and more will occur Sunday, October 7th from 9:15 – 10:15 AM Planning for the Halloween/All Saints Celebration scheduled for Sunday, October 28th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. This event is open to the parish. Games, snacks, fellowship and fun is the schedule for the evening (d) COMPLETED: Registration and Open House for the 2007 – 2008 program RCIA has 3 candidates and 1 catechumen. Meetings are held each Tuesday beginning at 7:00 PM 2. PROBLEMS: 3. AREAS IN WHICH ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED FROM PARISH COUNCIL: 4.
